@timmy thanks I was missing that distinction. That said, you can do call forwarding of numbers to and from skype. Guess I'm looking for something more in Google Voice that just isn't there. :) Might be a bit of bad branding with the name Google Voice driving my perception in the wrong direction. When I think of the old name (grandcentral) your description makes a lot more sense. When I think of Google Voice, well I expect the exchange of voices.

Me suspects someone at google went cheap on the marketing studies. :)

@brettbum: Well, Skype and Google Voice are two different services in two totally different categories.

Skype is the ever-so-well-known Voice over IP (or VoIP) service which allows voice AND video conversations over the internet for free(oh, and it does IM too). If you subscribe to Skype's In or Out services, you can also use it to make and receive calls from non-Skype phone numbers. Basically, Skype is in the VoIP category.

Google Voice, on the other hand, is more of a call-forwarding service. You receive a local phone number from Google Voice, and then have calls received by that number forwarded to your actual phones. The idea is that someone can call ONE number and reach you on whichever phone you want them to. As you can see from this post, Google Voice goes beyond just this but that's the basic idea. Google Voice is in the Call Forwarding category.

Hope that helps!

I definitely think the voice transcription service looks cool, but everything else just seems like a skype knock off. What am I missing that is better than skype? :)

Does the job for me. I use it as a 411 rapid distribution service. Someone needs to send a message to a group of people fast, calls the number, and that message is emailed to a group of people to respond. Because of the voice transcription, people who only get SMS on the go can read the voicemails left, though right now its pretty touch and go on the recognition.

All in all, definitely worth it.
